Capture
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Capture the display under the pointer | ⌘⇧3 |
| Capture an area or window | ⌘⇧4 |
| Capture a window | ⇧⌥⌘3 |
| Copy text from an area or window | ⌥⌘8 |
For an area, drag to select it. Press Space to switch between area and window selection, or Esc to cancel. When selecting a window, ⇧-click captures it without its shadow.
Window screenshots include a background by default. Turn off Add a background to window screenshots in Settings → Screenshots to capture them without one. ⌥-click a window to reverse that preference for a single capture.
Screenshots save as PNG files and copy to the clipboard by default. Click the thumbnail in the corner to edit, or drag it straight into another app. Change the save folder, clipboard behavior, boundary snapping, and desktop-icon cleanup in Settings → Screenshots.
Annotate and share
The image editor includes arrows, shapes, pen, highlighter, text, numbered steps, blur, pixelation, and spotlight. You can also crop the image or place it on a background with padding and an aspect ratio.
Press ⌘C to copy the finished image or ⌘S to save it. Open Screenshot History from the menu bar to reopen a shot with its annotations still editable.
Capture Text
Capture Text reads the selected region on your Mac and copies the recognized text. Nothing is uploaded. Press Space to read a whole window instead of drawing an area.
